MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team made the short trip south on I-79 to Allegheny College on Wednesday evening and blanked the Gators, 9-0, to open the 2015-16 dual season. Mercyhurst starts the season with a 1-0 record while the Gators dropped to 1-2 overall.
The Lakers wasted little time jumping out to a 3-0 lead by virtue of winning all three doubles matches.
Sophomore sensation
Saioa Gomez de Segura teamed up with junior
Annie Baich for an 8-0 win over Allegheny's team of Sloane Prince and Heidi Mueller at #2. Sophomore
Adina Spahalic and freshman
Kayla Frost followed with an 8-1 victory at #3 while sophomore
Adrianna Jeffress and freshman
Carmen Mantecon Duro polished off the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at #1.
It was more of the same in singles action as the Lakers posted five of their six wins in straight sets. Jeffress had to work extra at #2 after getting a good test from Allegheny's Mikaela Pope. The Laker sophomore prevailed - 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 - to complete the sweep.
Also earning victories in singles action were Gomez de Segura, Mantecon Duro, Baich, Frost, and Spahalic.
