ERIE, Pa. - Junior
Joseph Korb's rebound goal, 1:49 into the second overtime, gave the Mercyhurst University men's soccer team a hard-fought 3-2 win over visiting West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest Friday afternoon. The Lakers' first win improved their record to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Golden Rams dropped to 1-2 and 0-1.
A wild first half saw the teams divide four goals in alternating fashion. Redshirt sophomore
Michael Lennox (his first at 18:15) and redshirt senior
Thomas Davis (1; 36:59) did the damage for the home team while junior Brian Shaefer (28:52) and sophomore Kody Eberly (44:23) countered for West Chester.
With light rain falling, neither team scored for the next 47:26 of game time before Korb sent the home crowd home in good spirits. Graduate student
Thom Derks assisted on both the Lakers' first and final goals. His shot in the second overtime was stopped by WCU keeper Matt Palmer (1-2), but Korb was there to bang home the rebound. Palmer made seven stops in the contest.
Mercyhurst junior netminder
Nicholas Smith (1-2) was credited with five saves. The Lakers attempted 20 shots in the game - ten on goal - while the Golden Rams attempted 13, seven on target. West Chester had an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.
The win was the first for new Mercyhurst men's coach
Nenad Vidakovic in three tries.
