ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University baseball team tuned up for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regionals next week with a 12-2 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny on Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field. Freshman Daniel Elliot hit for the cycle to lead a 16-hit attack while five pitchers combined to limit PSUGA to five hits.
Elliot elevated his game with each at bat to accomplish the feat. He singled in the second, doubled in a three-run fourth, tripled in a five-run fifth, and hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the sixth. The triple and four-hit-game were the first of Elliot's career while his three runs scored and ten total bases were also season bests. The Willoughby, Ohio, native drove in four runs and raised his average 43 points to .309 before exiting the contest for a pinch-hitter.
Junior
Brendan Cox joined Elliot with four hits of his own, his second four-hit effort in the team's last three games. Cox ended the afternoon hitting .373.
Redshirt sophomore
Colin McKee started for the Lakers and allowed only one hit in three innings of work. Junior
Matthew Jaskolka (5-1) worked two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and fanned three. Junior
Cam Knott allowed one hit in two innings while freshman
Matthew Minnick struck out the side in the eighth. Junior
Ben Nolan tossed the ninth, allowed two hits, and walked in a pair of runs. In all, Mercyhurst pitchers fanned 13 batters. The defense played flawlessly and turned three double plays.
Eddie Emes (5-3) took the loss for PSUGA. After limiting the Lakers to just two singles (one in the infield) in the first three innings, Emes allowed four hits and three runs in the home fourth. Mercyhurst collected nine more runs against the PSUGA bullpen.
Troy Ambros had three of the Nittany Lions' five hits.
Penn State Greater Allegheny, the PSU Athletic Conference champions, had a 15-game winning streak snapped as its record slipped to 29-7.The Lakers (35-8) last played against Millersville on day three of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament last weekend in Butler, Pa - a 7-6 loss in ten innings that eliminated the Lakers from the tournament. The Marauders went on to win the PSAC Tournament, defeating East Stroudsburg in the title game.
Mercyhurst is currently the top-ranked team in the region according to the latest NCAA poll that was released on Wednesday. By virtue of winning the conference tournament, Millersville climbed to second. Seton Hill, Winston-Salem State, and Shepherd rounded out the top five.
