DAHLONEGA, Ga. – After dropping a pair of games yesterday, the Mercyhurst University softball team split two games to conclude play at the 2015 Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic. The Lakers (2-6) went on to win game one against Wayne State, 3-0, and then, lost, 6-1, in nine innings to McKendree.
In game one, the Lakers used a three run top of the first to jump ahead of the Warriors early. It was all
Annie Truelove (1-3) needed as she pitched a complete game shutout. Truelove allowed only four hits and struck out four. With the bases loaded, Wayne State pitcher Haley Hurd walked in
Allison Yule. Hurd threw a wild pitch the following batter allowing
Rachel DiBartolomeo to come around and score.
Courtney Brothers was then hit by a pitch that sent
Emily Hair home for the final run of the inning. The Lakers out hit the Warriors 7-4.
After neither team could record a run in eight innings of play, McKendree opened up the game scoring six runs.
Kayla Larson doubled to left field in the bottom half of the ninth inning scoring DiBartolomeo to put the Lakers on the board.
Alexandra Puckly pitched eight and two-thirds allowing 12 hits and five earned runs.
Heather Nye came in to relieve Puckly to record the final out of the top of the ninth.
Mercyhurst will be back in action Tuesday, March 10, at the University of West Florida for a double-header. Game one will begin at 3:00 p.m.
