PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Mercyhurst University softball team split a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Pensacola, Florida. The Lakers defeated the host West Florida 7-3 in game one, and then, lost game two, 3-0.
In game one, the Lakers fell behind early 1-0 after the first before taking the lead in the third. With one out and no one on,
Allison Yule ripped a double to left center.
Rachel DiBartolomeo would follow with a single that advanced Yule to third. After DiBartolomeo stole second putting both runners in scoring position,
Becky Malaga singled through the right the side scoring Yule and advancing DiBartolomeo to third. DiBartolomeo would later score when Larson reached on a fielders' choice.
Taylor Jezuit finished off the scoring with an RBI single to right center scoring Malaga, ending the top of the frame with a 3-1 advantage.
Back-to-back singles from DiBartolomeo and Malaga started off the fourth inning.
Kayla Larson would score DiBartolomeo from third, when she reached on a fielding error. With the bases loaded,
Annie Truelove drew a walk to record an RBI and score Malaga, to take a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
Mercyhurst would add a run in the fifth after DiBartolomeo recorded her third hit of the day and her first RBI, when she singled up the middle scoring
Shannon Minihane. The Lakers posted up their last run when
Cassandra Egelston reached on a fielding error scoring
Courtney Brothers.
Truelove would receive the win, moving her record to 2-3. She finished pitching four innings, allowing five hits and only one run.
Heather Nye came in to relieve Truelove, pitching the final three innings and picked up the save.
The Lakers outhit the Argonauts 12-7 in game one.
In game two, Mercyhurst was held to one hit off winning pitcher Becca Taylor (2-1). Second basemen
Courtney Brothers broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth with a single down the right field line. West Florida scored their three runs in the first two innings off of
Alexandra Puckly (1-3), who received the loss. Puckly pitched four innings allowing five hits and three runs, two earned. Truelove pitched the final two innings in relief.
The Lakers will resume play Saturday, March 14 in the Salem, Virginia Tournament. They will play two games Saturday, one at 10:00 a.m. against West Liberty, and the other at 4:00 p.m. against Concord University.
