ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team won its second consecutive match on Saturday afternoon after a convincing 8-1 victory over visiting Ashland University at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Lakers improved to 3-1 overall on the season.
The Lakers won all three doubles matches and then took five of the six singles contests en route to the victory. In doubles, freshman
Adrianna Jeffress and senior
Sarah Baich teamed up for an 8-0 win over Ashland's duo of Martina Baca and Mey Fitzpatrak at #1 which was followed by a 9-8 (7-5) victory at #2 by freshman
Adina Spahalic and senior
Katelyn Caniford. The Lakers won the third doubles match via forfeit.
In singles, freshman
Saioa Gomez de Segura and Jeffress posted identical 6-1, 6-0 victories at #1 and #2, with Jeffress' match sealing the Laker victory. Sophomore
Annie Baich also had a straight-set victory at #3, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ashland's Kendal Stephens. Caniford won her singles' match, 6-0, 6-1, at #5 while junior
Devon Hubbard posted a forfeit win at #6.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday, February 25, when it travels to Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio.
