Men’s Hoops Handles Seton Hill, 76-54, for Fifth Straight Win

GREENSBURG, Pa. – In the final game of the regular season, the Mercyhurst men's basketball team ended their schedule on a five game win streak defeating Seton Hill, 76-54, entering the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament next Saturday. Gerrae Williams posted a career-high 26 points to lead the Lakers. Williams finished 9-of-14 from the field, eight of the field goals coming from three-point range (8-of-9).

Seton Hill would lead by six midway through the first half before Mercyhurst went on a 13-2 run, to take a five point advantage with three minutes to play. Callon Dailey scored seven of the 15 points during the stretch, and the Lakers took a three point lead into the break, 30-27. The Laker defense held the Griffins to just 37.0% (10-27) shooting from the field and 1-9 (11.1%) from behind the arc.

A 10-0 run by Mercyhurst to open up the second half gave the Lakers their largest lead of the night, 40-27. The run was highlighted by back-to-back three pointers from Dailey and Williams with Kayode Ajenifuja also recording two layups.

After a Noah Davis three ball pulled the Griffins back within single digits, 40-31, Mercyhurst would shut the door with a 17-4 run, to open a 22 point lead at the 11:00 mark. Williams hit two of his eight three pointers over the stretch. He would give the Lakers their largest lead of the afternoon when he hit seventh three of the game, giving Mercyhurst a 31 point advantage, 69-38.

Mercyhurst continued their hot shooting, they finished the game shooting 55.6% (30-54) from the field and 57.1% (12-21) from three. It was the third consecutive game the Lakers have shot over 50% from the field. The defense was back to their normal dominance, holding the Griffins under 60 points. Mercyhurst also went on to outrebound Seton Hill, 28-23.

Along with Williams, Dailey and Ajenifuja finished in double figures. Dailey scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists, while Ajenifuja added 12 points and three rebounds. Kameron Taylor paced Seton Hill with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

With the win, Mercyhurst improves to 20-7 overall and 17-5 PSAC. This marks the first 20 win season since 2010-11. Seton Hill falls to 7-18, 6-15 PSAC.

The Lakers will wait and see where they finish when the PSAC regular season concludes Wednesday, February 25. The PSAC Tournament first round begins next Saturday, February 28.
