ERIE, Pa. --
Megan Whiddon had two goals as the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team salvaged a 4-4 tie with Robert Morris during Saturday's College Hockey America contest at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Jennifer MacAskill added a goal and an assist while
Taylor Accursi also tallied a goal for the Lakers (8-7-3, 6-0-2), who once led 3-1 before the visiting Colonials (9-6-3, 3-3-2) stormed back with three straight scores.
Only 48 seconds into the contest, Whiddon gave Mercyhurst its first lead with assists from
Brooke Hartwick and
Morgan Stacey. RMU's Amanda Pantaleo tied the contest on a power-play goal with 1:56 remaining in the opening period.
The Lakers then took a 3-1 lead in the second as Accursi and MacAskill scored roughly four minutes apart. MacAskill assisted the Accursi goal;
Jaclyn Arbour had a helper on the MacAskill goal.
Mercyhurst looked to take its two-goal lead into the second intermission, but Amber Rennie found the net for the Colonials with 12 seconds remaining in the contest. That triggered a surge which saw Robert Morris take the lead in the third.
Kirsten Welsh had a power-play goal and Sarah Quaranta scored an even-strength tally as the Colonials grabbed a 4-3 advantage with 9:32 left in the third.
Whiddon eventually answered for MU with seven minutes remaining, getting a power-play goal with helpers from
Paige Horton and
Molly Blasen for the game's final goal.
Laker goaltender
Sarah McDonnell had 13 saves while RMU goalie Jessica Dodds stopped 28 shots at the other end.
Mercyhurst outshot Robert Morris, 32-17. The Lakers were 1 of 4 on the power play; the Colonials finished 2 for 4.
The Lakers will return to action with a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, Jan. 2, and Sunday, Jan. 3, against Rensselaer.
