Women's Basketball Holds Off West Virginia Wesleyan, 88-80

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. -- Natalie Piaggesi scored 21 points, leading a quintet of Mercyhurst scorers in double-figures, as the Lakers' women's basketball team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 88-80, in non-conference action on Saturday.

Piaggesi also had nine rebounds and three blocks to lead the Laker effort. Jessica Bell and Jalin Steel added 16 points each, Alex Artis scored 14 points and Angela Heintz put in 13 points.

Mercyhurst opened the game with a 16-5 before taking a 40-22 halftime lead.

Artise buried a three-pointer with 2:36 left in the third quarter, giving the Lakers their largest lead at 60-37.

The hosts closed their deficit to six points with 35 seconds left in the fourth, but that was as close as the Bobcats (1-6) would get.

Mercyhurst (4-8) will play its next contest on Wednesday when it visits Slippery Rock for a 5 p.m. PSAC tip-off.
