ERIE, Pa. –
Gerrae Williams drilled a 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining in overtime to send Mercyhurst to a 71-70 victory over Kutztown.
Sean Beins, who had a game-high 20 points, gave Mercyhurst a 3-point lead following his shot from behind the arc with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Kutztown's Ethan Ridgeway then drove down the court, pulled up and shot over a Laker defender to knot the game at 62-62 with 31 seconds to play. Beins had a chance to win in regulation but his shot went wide and Kutztown's full-court heave had no chance.
H'ian Hale's two free-throws midway through the overtime period tied the game for the 11
th time and Anthony Selby connected on a layup at 1:54 before Williams' heroics. Each team missed its final two shots and Kutztown's Austin Beidelman was whistled for an offensive charge with six seconds remaining.
Mercyhurst (3-1, 2-1 PSAC) received a double-digit effort from
Damon Jones (14 points) in the victory and featured a balanced scoring attack from all Lakers as the reserves nearly equaled the starters in points. Kutztown (3-1, 2-1 PSAC) had three players in double-figures, including a team-high 17 from Ryan Connolly.
The Lakers return to action on November 24 when they travel to Daemen College.
