ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season in four tries and, in the process, handed Shippensburg its first setback in four games with a 67-65 victory Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC). The Lakers are now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Shippensburg dropped to 3-1 and 1-1, respectively. The contest was the first at home for the Lakers this season.
The game was tight throughout. The Raiders had a seven-point advantage in the first quarter while the Lakers owned a six-point margin in the fourth. Shippensburg led 19-16 after one, 34-31 at halftime, and 50-48 after three before Mercyhurst rallied.
Junior
Natalie Piaggesi paced the Mercyhurst attack with 14 points while juniors
Jessica Bell and
Jalin Steel added 13 apiece. Steel's points came off the bench as Mercyhurst enjoyed a 21-13 advantage in that department. Shippensburg junior Logan Snyder led all scorers with 18 points while junior Colleen Young contributed 12 and senior Stephanie Knauer added 11.
Mercyhurst won the rebounding battle 35-30 but turned the ball over 23 times to 17 for the Raiders. The Lakers converted only 11-of-23 free throws but made six triples to none for the Shippensburg.
The Lakers continue weekend play Sunday when they host Kutztown at 1:00 p.m. in another PSAC crossover game.
