WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. - Four Mercyhurst Lakers scored in double-figures but it was not enough to overcome No. 21-ranked West Liberty in the season-opener, 78-64.
Adrienne Kloecker led all scorers with 17 points while
Angela Heintz added 13 points and
Jessica Bell and
Natalie Piaggesi each added 11 points for the Lakers. Â
Mercyhurst never led in the contest, succombing to a 41-23 deficit at halftime before mounting a rally in the third quarter. Â After being held to just 28 points through the first 23 minutes, the Lakers closed out the third quarter on an extended 26-9 run to pull within striking distance, 60-54, heading into the fourth quarter. Â However, the Hilltoppers outscored Mercyhurst 18-10 in the final quarter to seal the victory.
The Lakers take on Notre Dame College in the final game of the opening weekend tournament. Â Notre Dame fell to defending national champion California (Pa.) 76-67 in the first game of the Mountain East / Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament.
