FJ Williams and
Logan Weaver each scored a touchdown for Mercyhurst but it was not enough to get by as the Lakers fell at Shippensburg in the regular-season finale, 69-20.
The Red Raiders used a strong ground game to push past Mercyhurst with Ship's Ryan Zapoticky rushing 13 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns while Andrew Smith, Shannon Maura and Chase Yocum each added rushing scores. Â The Lakers did not have an answer for Zapoticky, who also added three touchdowns through the air, and 200 yards on 10 of 18 pass attempts.
Mercyhurst ends the season at 5-6 overall while Shippensburg improves to 8-3.Â
The Lakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 17-yard Brown-Dukes run before Shippensburg put up 28 unanswered for a 28-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Â Â
FJ Williams hauled in a 6-yard pass to cut the Red Raiders lead to 28-14 with 6:21 remaining in the first half, but two more Ship scores gave the Red Raiders a 41-14 advantage at halftime.
Weaver's 1-yard run to start the fourth quarter brought the score to 55-20 and Ship closed out with two more scores for the final tally.
Brown-Dukes finished as the Lakers leader on the ground with 17 carries for 74 yards while
Logan Weaver went 19-for-34 with 229 yards at quarterback. Â Williams was the leading wide receiver with seven catches for 75 yards while
Jaquan Williams added six catches for 57 yards.
