ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team defeated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe Indiana Pa., 6-4, Wednesday afternoon at Tullio Field. Jessica Brandon recorded a hat trick, helping the Lakers improve to 4-7 overall and 2-3 PSAC. IUP falls to 4-7, 2-4 PSAC.
Brandon, a freshman, put Mercyhurst ahead early, scoring her fifth goal of the season as she dribbled down the right side and was able to beat Crimson Hawks goalkeeper Olivia Accardi left side.
Freshman Kaitlyn Lechner gave the Lakers a 2-0 advantage at the 24:29 mark when she received a pass from outside the circle that played through the IUP defense. Lechner was able to deflect the pass into the back of the net for her first career goal. Emily Burns was credited with the assist.
With Mercyhurst coming out of the half with a 2-0 lead, Brandon would again begin the scoring. This time, she was assisted Katelyn Smith, who blasted a shot off the keeper's pad and found Brandon for the rebound goal.
Mercyhurst would gain a 4-0 advantage just 20 seconds later as Amanda Schanz scored her second goal of the season. Schanz's goal was assisted by Lechner.
IUP would post two quick goals of their own to cut the Mercyhurst lead in half with 24 minutes play. However, Brandon, a Mars, Pa. native, would put the Lakers back ahead by three with her third goal of the afternoon. A Christina Mertz pass into the box found Brandon for a one-timer into the back of the net.
Amanda Frappolli would put an end to the Mercyhurst scoring frenzy as Nicolette Tomani dished a cross-pass in front of the net, setting up Frappolli for her first goal of the season.
With a 6-2 lead and only 13 minutes remaining to play, IUP posted two more late goals to cut end the score at 6-4. IUP's last goal came off a corner opportunity with no time remaining on the clock.
Both teams were credited with nine shots apiece, while IUP held the corner advantage, 9-4.
Seniors Sam Takac and Kirsten Rambo each recorded two saves, while Takac picked up the win, her fourth of the season.
Brandon's hat trick was the first since Marissa Faso on October 22, 2014 in a, 6-3, win at Seton Hill.
Mercyhurst will travel to #4 Shippensburg on Saturday for another PSAC match. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
