Jenna Dingeldein's game-winning goal at 2:07 in overtime sealed the Mercyhurst comeback against RIT, lifting the Lakers to a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon.
Molly Blasen and
Sarah Hine combined for assists on the game-winner as Mercyhurst (2-5-1, 2-0-0 CHA) completed the weekend sweep of the Tigers (3-6-0, 0-3-0 CHA) in the Lakers' opening weekend of College Hockey America action.
With 1:28 remaining in regulation, Mercyhurst benefited from a power-play goal by
Sarah Robello to knot the score at 3-3 and send it to the extra session. Â The Lakers found themselves trailing the Tigers on three separate occasions in the contest, but refused to give up and took advantage of costly RIT penalties in the third.
Mercyhurst out-shot RIT, 32-19, including 27-9 after the opening period. Mercyhurst was 2-for-4 with the man-advantage, while RIT was 1-for-4.Â
After being shutout 5-0 on Friday night, RIT opened the scoring in Saturday's contest just 4:18 into the game thanks to Reagan Rust. Â That lead would hold until 9:41 in the second period when the Lakers
J'nai Mahadeo tallied the equalizer on a power play with assists by
Sarah Hine and
Rachael Smith. Â RIT countered with a shorthanded goal by Carly Payerl for a 2-1 lead at 13:39 before the Lakers again closed the gap near the end of the second period when Smith found the back of the net at 18:27 (assists by
Kathy Donohue and
Lauren Kilroy).
RIT struck quickly to open the third when Cassie Clayton put the Tigers ahead 3-2 at 4:44 in the third stanza and would hold the lead until Robello's goal.
Mercyhurst hits the road for its next contests, a two-game tilt against Penn State on Nov 6-7 in University Park, Pa. before returning home on Nov. 13-14 for its third consecutive weekend of CHA action against Lindenwood.
