COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Mercyhurst University men's hockey team allowed three second-period goals and dropped a 5-1 decision against the Buckeyes of Ohio State University on Saturday afternoon at the Value City Arena. The Lakers dropped to 6-4-0 overall while Ohio State earned its first victory of the season (1-7-0).
After earning a 2-1 victory over the Buckeyes on Friday night, the Lakers just couldn't get anything going on Saturday afternoon against Ohio State netminder, Matt Tomkins. Meanwhile, freshman
Adam Carlson made his second collegiate start after earning a 5-2 victory in last Saturday's series finale against Army West Point. The freshman was peppered with 52 shots on goal by the Buckeye offense and, despite allowing five goals, kept the Lakers in the game for much of the afternoon.
Ohio State scored the only goal of the opening period when Nick Schilkey scored during a power play opportunity with 2:27 left in the opening twenty minutes. Matthew Weis and Anthony Greco had the assists.
The Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 17-4, in the opening period.
Luke Stork gave the hosts a 2-0 lead just 24 seconds into the second period. John Wiitala and Schilkey followed with goals at 5:08 and 12:39 respectively to extend the Ohio State lead to 4-0 after two periods.
Ohio State held a 20-11 shot advantage in the middle stanza.
Matthew Weis notched a power play goal at 4:44 of the third to give the Buckeyes a 5-0 advantage. Junior defenseman
Philippe Drouin broke up Tomkins' shutout bid with his third goal of the season at the 8:39 mark for the final tally of the afternoon. Freshmen

Ohio State edged the Lakers in third period shots, 15-13, and held a 52-28 shot advantage over the sixty minutes. Carlson stopped 47 shots in suffering his first loss of the season. He dropped to 1-1-0 overall. Tomkins stopped 27 shots for his first win of the year (1-5-0).
Mercyhurst was assessed six minor penalties while the Buckeyes were whistled for three minors. Ohio State went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Lakers were 0-for-3.
The Lakers will return to the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7 for a pair of contests against Atlantic Hockey-rival Air Force. Faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
