Field Hockey Prevails, 1-0, Over Limestone in Overtime on Senior Day

ERIE, PA – The Mercyhurst field hockey team ended the 2015-16 season with a non-conference win over Limestone, 1-0, in overtime Saturday morning. With the win, Mercyhurst finishes the season at 8-10 overall, while the Saints fall to 9-6.

In the first half, the visiting Saints were ready to play, posting eight shots and were awarded six corners. The Lakers didn't shy away as they also had opportunities to score, putting four shots on goal.

With only three combined shots between both teams in the second half (Mercyhurst 2 – Limestone 1), the game went to overtime, the Lakers' thid overtime match of the year. The Lakers were 1-1 in overtime games this season prior to Saturday.

The Lakers didn't need long as freshman Katelyn Smith tallied her fifth goal of the season two minutes into the first overtime frame. Senior Cayla Slade dished a pass to Kaitlyn Lechner who, then, shot a dribbler through the goalies legs for Smith to tap into the net for the win.

It was the first time Mercyhurst won its regular season finale since October 28, 2009. The Lakers defeated Seton Hill, 5-1.

Prior to the game, Mercyhurst honored six seniors  – #4 Kierstyn Sturmer, #9 Andrea Goldbach, #14 Emily Koeslter, #16 Amanda Schanz, #21 Slade, and #73 Kirsten Rambo.
