GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-game decision on the road at Seton Hill University on Friday night. The Lakers dropped to 14-13 overall and 9-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. The Griffins improved to 20-9 overall and 11-5 in conference action.
After dropping the first game, 25-13, Mercyhurst responded with a 25-21 win in game two to even the match at one apiece. The Griffins put themselves a win away with a 25-21 win in game three before the Lakers, again, rebounded with a 25-23 win in game four to force the fifth and deciding game. Mercyhurst led the fifth game, 10-8, before Seton Hill scored the final seven points to earn a 15-10 win.
Junior
Sarah Wegrzyn led the Lakers with 16 points after posting a team-high 14 kills to go along with a service ace and two block assists. Wegrzyn also chipped in with eight digs on defense. Junior
Haley Adams added nine kills, two aces, a solo block, and three block assists to post 13.5 points while junior
Lauren Kenny also had nine kills, an ace, and three block assists for 11.5 points.
Seniors
Erin Byrnes and
Lexi Stefanov added 12 and 8.5 points respectively in the loss. Senior setter
Kelly Vitt had 35 assists and 11 digs while junior
Samantha Giardina posted a team-high 17 digs.
Mercyhurst will head to California, Pa., for a match against the Vulcans on Saturday, October 31. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
