ERIE, Pa. - One day after arguably its best performance of the season on Friday night, the Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team turned it up another notch on Saturday afternoon in posting a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Griffins of Seton Hill University at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers improved to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC Western Division while Seton Hill dropped to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in conference action. Mercyhurst won by the scores of 25-22, 25-12, and 25-22 in the sweep.

Samantha Giardina and senior
Lexi Stefanov also added kills for the Lakers. Mercyhurst also took advantage of four errors by the Griffins during the spurt. Mercyhurst was able to hold off the Griffins the rest of the way to earn the 25-22 win in game one.
The Lakers dominated from start to finish in game two in posting a 25-12 victory. During the middle game, the Lakers hit .378 and limited the Griffins to an .086 attack percentage. Mercyhurst also led from start to finish in game three but never led by more than four. Junior
Sarah Wegrzyn led the way with six kills in game three while limiting the Griffins to just an .031 hitting percentage.
Wegrzyn led the way with 13 kills and a block assist for a total of 13.5 points. Byrnes had another double-double on the afternoon, posting ten kills and 15 digs for a total of 13 points. Kenny chipped in with nine kills while junior
Haley Adams had five kills, a solo block, and two block assists. Stefanov also posted six kills in the victory.
Senior setter
Kelly Vitt had 39 assists and 11 digs while Giardina contributed a match-high 19 digs in the win.
After starting the season with an 0-5 record, Mercyhurst has won nine of its last twelve matches to get to a game above .500 on the season. The Lakers will look to continue their torrid stretch when they make the short trip to downtown Erie to take on crosstown-rival Gannon University on Tuesday, October 6 at the Hammermill Center. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
