Men's Hockey Completes Sweep Of Army With 5-2 Win Saturday Night

ERIE, Pa. - Freshman forward Chris Makowski scored his first two collegiate goals and freshman goaltender Adam Carlson stopped 33-of-35 shots in his first collegiate start to lift the Mercyhurst University men's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Black Knights of Army West Point to complete a weekend sweep at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday night. The Lakers improved to 5-3-0 overall and remained perfect in the Atlantic Hockey standings, moving to 4-0-0 in conference play. The Black Knights fell to 0-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in league action.

Mercyhurst also got a goal and two assists from junior defenseman Philippe Drouin and three assists from sophomore forward Kane Elliot in the victory. Freshman Matthew Whittaker earned his first collegiate point with an assist on Drouin's goal early in the third period.

The win gave Mercyhurst head coach Rick Gotkin his 498th career victory as he inches closer to becoming the 23rd coach in the history of college hockey, at any division, to record 500 career victories. The win also continued the dominance by the Lakers in the all-time series against Army. Mercyhurst improved to 37-9-4 lifetime against the Black Knights and extended the team's unbeaten streak to 22 games in the all-time series (18-0-4). Army has not posted a victory over Mercyhurst since a 4-3 win at West Point on January 10, 2009 and has not defeated the Lakers in Erie since February 25, 2006.

Makowski got the Lakers going, notching his first career goal at the 11:25 mark of the opening period, flipping a backhander over the shoulder of Army netminder Cole Bruns, who also started Friday night's game for the Black Knights. Elliot and sophomore Bryan Sienerth had the assists.

Army responded on the power play when Trevor Fidler scored his second goal of the season from Conor Andrle and Nash Worden at 14:09.

Mercyhurst, which was outshot, 39-18, on Friday night, outshot Army in the opening twenty minutes by a 12-6 count.

Sophomore Jonathan Charbonneau gave the Lakers their one-goal lead back at the 4:24 mark of the second when he jammed home a rebound past Bruns. Drouin and freshman Josh Lammon had the assists on Charbonneau's team-leading fifth goal of the season. The sophomore scored only seven goals in 39 games during his rookie campaign a year ago.

Makowski then redirected a shot from the point by senior Mychal Monteith at 9:23 of the middle stanza to give the Lakers a 3-1 cushion. Elliot had the other helper on Makowski's first career power play goal and, what also proved to be, his first game-winning marker.

Army silenced the Laker faithful just under three minutes later when Ryan Nick one-timed a pass from Taylor Maruya and past Carlson to cut the Mercyhurst lead to 3-2 at the 11:52 mark of the second. Shane Hearn had the other helper.

Shots favored Army in the second, 17-13.

Drouin regained the two-goal lead for the Lakers at the 3:10 mark of the third when he tipped a centering feed from Elliot past Bruns for his second goal of the season. Whittaker picked up his first collegiate point with the secondary assist. Freshman Derek Barach put the game away with his third goal of the season at 16:15. Drouin and junior Kyle Dutra had the assists.

Army outshot Mercyhurst, 12-11, in the third, but it was the Lakers holding a slim 36-35 edge in shots for the contest. Carlson, making his first collegiate start, was brilliant and made a number of tough saves to keep the Black Knights at bay. He stopped 33 shots for his first career win. Bruns dropped to 0-2 after stopping 31 Mercyhurst shots on goal.

The teams combined for three majors and three game misconducts which aided in 65 combined penalty minutes. The Black Knights were whistled for two of the majors and game misconducts and finished with 40 minutes on nine infractions. The Lakers were whistled seven times for 25 minutes. Mercyhurst went 1-for-6 on the power play while Army was 1-for-5.

Mercyhurst will head to Columbus, Ohio next Friday and Saturday, October 30 and 31, to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State. Faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. respectively.
