Zimmerman’s Late Goal Leads Women’s Soccer to 2-1 Win at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, PA – Junior Carly Zimmerman scored with just over ten minutes to play to secure a Mercyhurst 2-1 victory over Mansfield. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win snaps a three game losing streak and improves the Lakers' record to 6-6-2, 5-6-2 PSAC. The Mountaineers fall to 3-9-1 overall, 2-9-1 conference.

After Mercyhurst outplayed Mansfield in the first half, outshooting the Mountaineers, 9-5, while also holding the corner advantage, 8-0, both teams entered the locker rooms tied at zero.

Junior Nicole McAlpin, a Fairport, N.Y. native scored the game's first goal nine and a half minutes into the second half. Her boot from 15 yards out beat Mountaineer's goalkeeper, Rachel Fox, right side. It was McAlpin's fourth goal of the season.

Mansfield would provide the equalizer just three minutes later as Kelsey Chapman received a pass from teammates Karyn Anselmo and Chelsea Hough and blasted a shot from ten yards out, beating Lakers' netminder Ellie McDougall left side.

That would leave Zimmerman, a Churchville, and N.Y. native, to score the game-winning goal at the 79:57 mark. Zimmerman was able to get a good leg on the ball, to place her shot to the right of Fox for her second goal of the season.

Mercyhurst would finish the contest outshooting Mansfield (19-11), while also holding the corner advantage (12-1).
McDougall recorded five saves on six Mountaineer shots on goal as she improves her record to 4-1.

The Lakers will resume conference play Tuesday at home against cross-town rival #1 Gannon. Game time is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m.
