Volleyball Sweeps East Stroudsburg; Loses In Five To West Chester On Friday

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches against PSAC Eastern Division foes on Friday afternoon in a crossover tournament hosted by East Stroudsburg University. The Lakers took care of the hosts in three games in the opener but then fell in heartbreaking fashion against West Chester in the nightcap. With the split, the Lakers moved to 11-11 overall and 6-5 in conference action.

Against East Stroudsburg, Mercyhurst swept the Warriors by the scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-11.

Junior Haley Adams had a big effort for the Lakers posting ten kills and a .643 hitting percentage for the match. She added three aces and totaled 13.5 points to make her the only Lakers with double-digit points.

Freshman Shelby Chesko added seven kills off the bench while juniors Sarah Puckett and Sarah Wegrzyn added five kills apiece. Junior Hannah Tombaugh led the team with 15 assists to go along with five digs.

It looked like more of the same was in store against West Chester as Mercyhurst jumped out to a two games to none lead. But, the Golden Rams battled back to take the next three games to earn the victory. Mercyhurst won games one and two by the scores of 27-25 and 25-18 while West Chester took games three, four, and five - 30-28, 25-21, and 15-10.

Wegrzyn led the Lakers with 17.5 points after contributing 14 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Senior Erin Byrnes led Mercyhurst with 15 kills and added 11 digs while Adams had another fine effort with nine kills (.282 hitting percentage), one solo block, and two assisted blocks.

Senior Kelly Vitt had 44 assists and added 19 digs on defense.

Mercyhurst will play two more matches on Saturday after shifting to Kutztown University. The Lakers will play the host school at 10:00 a.m. and then will square off against the Wolves of Cheyney University at 3:30 p.m.
