Men’s Hoops Uses Big Run to Defeat Shippensburg, 71-61

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's basketball team got the New Year off on the right foot Saturday with a 71-61 win at Shippensburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game. Mercyhurst put together an 18-2 run from late in the first half until early in the second to take control. The Lakers, who had a seven-game winning streak snapped at Millersville December 20, improved to 9-4 overall and to 6-2 in the PSAC. Shippensburg dropped to 6-5 and 2-5 respectively.

The Lakers jumped out to an early six point advantage midway through the first half and began to extend their lead. Mercyhurst would lead by as many nine during the period. A made three-pointer from Gerrae Williams pushed the lead to seven, while Sean Beins followed the basket with a jumper of his own to extend the advantage over the Raiders, 23-14, with 6:08 to play. in the half 

Shippensburg would cut the deficit to two with just under three minutes to play before a huge Lakers run opened up the game. Mercyhurst would go on an 18-2 surge that lasted till the 16:21 mark of the second half, pushing the lead to 18, 45-27.

James Ewing and Andy Hoying got the Lakers off to a fast second half start, owning the paint with six consecutive layups. Ewing and Hoying led the Lakers to a 40-22 advantage in scoring in the paint. Ewing also had the task of shutting down Shippensburg's leader Dylan Edgar, who is averaging a double-double this season. Ewing held Edgar to zero points and only one rebound in the first half, as he finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Shippensburg would cut the lead to as few as four in the second half with 2:01 to play. However, the Lakers finished the game strong from the free-throw line, making 17-20 (85.0%) for the game.

Ewing finished the game with a career-high 15 points to lead Mercyhurst in scoring. Hoying and Williams also finished in double digits with Hoying posting 14 and Williams 11. Justin McCarthur led all scorers with 22.

Mercyhurst shot 26-54 (48.1%) from the field and held the Raiders to 20-48 (41.7%). The Lakers also outrebounded Shippensburg, 34-26, on the glass.

The Lakers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Kutztown for another PSAC crossover. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
