ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team will return home to host California (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division matchup. Wednesday night's game will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Mercyhurst defeated Ursuline Saturday, January 24, at John Carroll University, 66-56, to conclude their non-conference schedule.
Angela Heintz led the Lakers in scoring, posting a game-high 12 points on 5-7 shooting from the field. Mercyhurst outrebounded the Arrows 50-38.
Natalie Piaggesi remains the leader in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.8 points and 7.6 rebounds. The Lakers are shooting 43.8% from the field this season, second best amongst PSAC teams.
California (Pa.) is coming off two PSAC Western Division contests last week. The Vulcans lost a tough battle at Gannon Thursday, January 22, 71-63. They would rebound on Saturday, defeating Slippery Rock on their home court, 74-63, to remain second in the Western Division. The Vulcans are averaging 73.1 points per game, fourth best in the PSAC. Emma Mahady leads California in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. She is currently the fourth leading scorer in the conference.
Mercyhurst has lost the last eight meetings to California with latest being earlier this season in November at the Convocation Center, 69-57. The Lakers last victory over the Vulcans came on January 15, 2011, at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, 73-54.
