Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – After a big opening night win Thursday at Notre Dame College (Ohio), the #6 ranked Lakers were beaten at the University of Charleston, West Virginia, Sunday, 4-1.
Mercyhurst struggled early as the Golden Eagles of Charleston scored in the 2
nd minute on a goal by Augusto Maciel, his first of the season. Maciel would, then, strike again in the 33
rd minute to make the score 2-0 at the end of the first half.
University of Charleston's Renan Ramos would add another goal for the Golden Eagles in the 65
th minute to put them ahead of the Lakers, 3-0. It was Ramos' third goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, in the 67
th minute, the Golden Eagles put a dagger into any hopes of a comeback when Will Roberts scored his third goal of the season beating Mercyhurst goal keeper,
Daniel Lowton.
The Lakers would get a goal in the 68
th minute from
Fernando Martinez. The goal was Martinez's first of the year and was assisted by defenseman
Sten Marcson.
It was a physical contest as both teams combined for 28 fouls and each had three yellow cards presented.
Mercyhurst was out shot in the contest, 11-7, and only recorded three shots on goal.
Goalie,
Daniel Lowton, made his first start of the season and recorded one save.
Mercyhurst looks to get back on track Tuesday, September 9, at home against Alderson Broaddus University. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
