Rough First Quarter Sends Football To Fourth Straight Loss

Box Score INDIANA, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University football team remained winless on the season after suffering a 41-7 loss against the Crimson Hawks of Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday in front of nearly 2,900 fans at George P. Miller Stadium. The Lakers fell to 0-4 on the season and dropped to 0-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC West standings.

Mercyhurst's start is the first time since 2005 that the Lakers have been winless through the first four games of the season. The 2005 squad started the year with six consecutive losses and finished the regular season with a 3-7 record.

It was a forgettable first quarter for the Lakers as IUP scored 27 points in the opening 15 minutes, thanks in part to two Mercyhurst fumbles, including one on the opening kickoff of the game. After sophomore Drew Robinson coughed up the ball at the 11-yard line on the kickoff, IUP freshman Luigi Lista-Brinza ran into the endzone on the first play from scrimmage to give the Crimson Hawks a 6-0 lead.

On the Lakers' ensuing possession, redshirt junior quarterback Brendan Boylan hooked up with junior wideout Jaquan Williams on a 47-yard pass play – the longest play from scrimmage for the Lakers this season - to get the Lakers in position to respond with some points. However, the drive stalled and sophomore Dylan Kondis missed a 36-yard field goal to keep the Lakers off the scoreboard.

Ten plays later, IUP was back in the endzone when Lista-Brinza plunged in from a yard out with 7:55 left. Brett Ullman, who missed a PAT try on the first touchdown after a bad snap, connected on the point after for a 13-0 IUP lead.

Mercyhurst again drove down the field on its next possession, only to have Robinson lose the football for the second time in the quarter at the IUP 26-yard line. Seven plays later, IUP scored again as quarterback Chase Haslett hooked up with Brock DeCicco for a 15-yard touchdown and a 20-0 Crimson Hawk lead.

After the Lakers had a three-and-out on offense with freshman quarterback Ramroth Finnegan at the helm, Lista-Brinza found paydirt for the third time in the quarter – this time from 41 yards out with 1:24 remaining in the quarter. Ullman added the point after and the scoring in the first came to an end.

Haslett found Drew Carswell in the endzone from 13 yards out with 6:08 left in the first half to give the Crimson Hawks a 34-0 lead at halftime. Chris Temple scampered in on a seven-yard run with 11:39 left in the third quarter for IUP's final points of the afternoon.

Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard after an interception by senior Colin Kimball at the Mercyhurst one-yard line. Under redshirt sophomore quarterback Zach Emerick, the Lakers drove 99 yards on 12 plays in 6:56 with Emerick calling his own number on a one-yard keeper to cap off the drive. It was Kimball's tenth career interception which tied him for seventh on the school's all-time list with Glenn Novak (1989-92). Novak is the father of Mercyhurst freshman Brad Novak.

Mercyhurst was limited to 146 yards of total offense, its lowest output of the season, and the program's lowest total since getting 133 total yards against the Crimson Hawks in a 42-10 loss at IUP on October 18, 2008. The Lakers had just 29 yards on the ground, also the lowest total of the year.

IUP, meanwhile, had 383 yards of total offense, with 215 of those coming on the ground. Lista-Brinza was used sparingly after the first quarter but he had already done plenty of damage. He finished the day with 103 yards and three scores on 16 carries. Haslett had a productive day at quarterback, completing 12-of-15 passes for 157 yards and two scores.

Robinson led the Lakers with 30 yards on five carries. Redshirt junior Brandon Brown-Dukes had the second-lowest total of his career – 16 yards on 14 carries. Boylan started and completed 4-of-12 passes for 59 yards. Emerick was 7-of-10 for 58 yards while Finnegan was 0-for-2 on his only series.

Mercyhurst returns home next Saturday, October 4, for its annual Homecoming weekend game against the Golden Eagles of Clarion. Kickoff from Tullio Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
