Field Hockey Pushes #2 Ship Before Falling Saturday

Marissa Faso and the Lakers were tied with the defending national champions at halftime Saturday.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team was tied with #2 Shippensburg at halftime before falling, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon. Kierstyn Sturmer scored a goal for the Lakers in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest.
 
After Ship, the 2013 NCAA Champion, scored to go ahead, 1-0, Mercyhurst answered. Blair Pembleton assisted on Sturmer's goal at the 28:40 mark, tying the game. The teams headed into the half even at one.
 
The Raiders took the lead at the 48:36 mark and then added insurance nearly ten minutes later. A late goal made the final score 4-1.
 
Jess Wess made 13 saves in net. The Lakers outshot Ship, 10-6, in the first half.
 
Mercyhurst is now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC. Shippensburg moved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. The Lakers play at Newberry and Limestone next weekend.
