MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team proved to be a rude guest Wednesday as the Lakers shut out Allegheny College 9-0. The win opened dual match play this fall for both teams.
Reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) singles champ, freshman Saoia Gomez de Segura, remained perfect on the young season with 6-2, 6-3 win in singles. She also teamed with sophomore
Annie Baich to record an 8-2 win in doubles. Other doubles' winners were the duos of senior
Sarah Baich and freshman
Adrianna Jeffress (8-0) and junior
Devon Hubbard and freshman
Adina Spahalic (8-5).
The Baich sisters also claimed straight set victories in singles. Sarah earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory while younger sister Annie claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win. Local products Jeffress (6-1, 6-3) and Spahalic (6-3, 6-1) earned straight-set wins in their first collegiate dual while Hubbard (6-3, 3-6, 10-8) needed three sets to complete the sweep.
The Lakers will return to action this coming weekend when they host the ITA Championships at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.
