Field Hockey Outlasts Slippery Rock on Goldbach Walk-Off

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team defeated #10 Slippery Rock, 4-3 in double overtime, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match Wednesday afternoon. Andrea Goldbach scored with 6:50 remaining in the second OT period, giving the Lakers a win in the home opener at Tullio Field
 
The Rock tied the game at 3 late in regulation. Mercyhurst had two penalty corner attempts after time expired, but could not end the contest. The teams battled back and forth throughout the first extra frame, which went by scoreless.
 
In the second OT, the Lakers had several chances to win it, but The Rock held off each time. Finally, Goldbach batted in a loose ball out of a scramble in front of the net.
 
Blair Pembleton got the Lakers going early, as the senior scored at the 19:58 mark to put Mercyhurst ahead, 1-0. She then found Marissa Faso cutting down the middle for a goal and a 2-0 advantage at the 21:30 mark. The hosts went into the half with a two-goal lead.
 
Slippery Rock got on the board with a penalty stroke early in the second half. At the 54:28 mark, Kelsey Gustafson scored her second goal, tying the match. However, the Lakers had an answer. Pembleton found Kelsey Lovelace sprinting in, putting the home team back on top just 13 seconds after The Rock evened the score. SRU would tie it again at the 68:18 mark, forcing overtime.
 
Pembleton finished with a goal and two assists. Wess made three saves in goal.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC. The Rock dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
 
The Lakers travel to #2 Shippensburg for another PSAC contest on Saturday, September 20. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
