Accurate Attack Leads Volleyball to Saturday Sweeps

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team swept two matches in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)/Mountain East Conference (MEC) Crossover Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers defeated Charleston and West Virginia State to wrap up a 4-0 weekend.
 
Mercyhurst (5-2) swept Charleston, 25-12, 25-16, and 25-12, to win its first match of the day. The Lakers put together a stellar hitting performance, attacking at .586 clip in the three games. In the opener, they recorded 15 kills, including four by Lexi Stefanov. Sarah Puckett, Camille Alvarez, and Rachel Crittle each scored to push the Eagles to the brink, and then Sarah Wegrzyn served an ace to close the set.
 
The Lakers hit .542 in the second game, totaling 13 kills and no attack errors. Lauren Kenny posted three early kills and then Erin Byrnes took over. The junior had back-to-back kills and then served throughout a 9-0 run that included an ace. Kelly Vitt found Wegrzyn for a point to give the hosts a 2-0 match advantage.
 
In the third frame, Mercyhurst hit .778, as Wegrzyn and Crittle contributed a pair of early points each. Puckett added two kills later and then Hannah Tombaugh assisted on a Wegrzyn kill to end the match.
 
Wegrzyn finished with 16.5 points, while Vitt dished out 23 assists. The team's .586 attack percentage is the best in the Coach Ryan Patton era at Mercyhurst.
 
In the second match of its day, Mercyhurst beat West Virginia State, 25-12, 25-14, and 25-15. Already ahead 19-12 near the end of the first game, Crittle sparked a run to close the frame. After an Alvarez point, Crittle served a pair of aces and then the Lakers won the game on a Jacket error.
 
Midway through the second set, Tai Lattimore led a Laker rally to pull away. With Lattimore serving, Vitt found Byrnes and Alvarez for kills. After a Lattimore ace, Byrnes scored again. Haley Adams closed the run with two kills and a block assist along with Byrnes. A Stefanov point won the game by 11 later on.
 
Adams posted 11.5 points, while Alvarez had 10.5 in the match. Vitt tallied 30 assists and Lattimore added 12 digs. The Lakers hit .327 as a team and held WVSU to .022 attacking.
 
The Lakers head to Philadelphia next weekend for four PSAC crossover matches. They'll play Kutztown and Cheyney at Cheyney on Friday, September 19, and then take on East Stroudsburg and West Chester at West Chester on Saturday, September 20.
