Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won two matches Friday in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)/Mountain East Conference (MEC) Crossover at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers swept West Liberty before taking care of Notre Dame (Ohio) College in four games.

The Lakers defeated West Liberty by scores of 25-7, 25-16, and 26-24 to open the home schedule in 2014.
Camille Alvarez started things with a kill and later,
Rachel Crittle served an ace to put the hosts up 4-0 early. A pair of
Sarah Wegrzyn kills made it 9-3. Wegrzyn sparked a Mercyhurst run with a kill and an ace as the home team went ahead, 17-5. Alvarez and
Lexi Stefanov each scored and then the duo teamed up for a block.
Kelly Vitt closed the game with two aces.

After taking the second frame, the Lakers had to battle in the third game. With the score tied at 17, Stefanov and Wegrzyn recorded points. The Hilltoppers evened the set at 20, but kills by Wegrzyn and
Erin Byrnes put the Lakers back up, 23-22. Byrnes posted a point and then Vitt assisted on a pair of Stefanov spikes to win the match in straight games.

Wegrzyn put up 20.5 points and eight digs. Stefanov added nine points, while Vitt posted 30 assists. Giardina registered 16 digs. As a team, the Lakers hit .375 for the match, including .484 in the final frame.

Against Notre Dame, the Lakers won by scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-9, and 25-17. The first game went back and forth, with the score eventually coming to a 22-all tie. A Wegrzyn kill put Mercyhurst up, and after a Falcon error, Crittle won the set with a kill.

After dropping the second game, the hosts stormed back in the third, pounding the Falcons.
Tai Lattimore started things with three aces as part of an 8-0 run. Wegrzyn tallied three kills in the spurt.
Haley Adams recorded a pair of points and then Wegrzyn served an ace to give the Lakers further control. Lattimore slammed the door with an ace on game point to give Mercyhurst a 2-1 match advantage.

Lattimore again rallied her team in the fourth, serving two aces in between kills by Wegrzyn and
Camille Alvarez. Vitt wrapped up an outstanding showing with 12 assists in the final game. The junior dished out a career-high 53 helpers on the night. The total is the most by a Laker setter since Kiera Rebert put up 55 assists on September 15, 2012, against Charleston.

Wegrzyn paced the team with 20.5 points and 13 digs. Stefanov contributed 11 kills and Alvarez had 10. Giardina tallied 19 digs and Alvarez posted 15 of her own.

Mercyhurst improved to 3-2 in 2014. It hosts Charleston at 12:05 p.m. and West Virginia State at 4:05 p.m. tomorrow at the MAC.
