Softball Rallies Early But is Swept by IUP on Saturday

INDIANA, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team fell twice to Indiana (Pa.) Saturday afternoon at Podbeilski Field.  The Lakers dropped a 9-1 decision in game one of the doubleheader and fell 6-4 after a late rally by the Crimson Hawks.
 
Mercyhurst is now 9-15 overall this season and fell to 3-5 in the PSAC West division.  Indiana (Pa.) improved to a perfect 6-0 record in the PSAC and are 12-4 overall.
 
The Lakers were held to just one run in game one and tallied just three hits against the Crimson Hawks.  IUP powered 11 hits off of the Lakers defense for the nine runs and suffered one error offensively.  Junior Annie Truelove (4-9) suffered the loss in 5.2 innings pitched with 11 hits, five earned runs, three hits and four strikeouts.
 
Indiana (Pa.) had a seven run lead over the Lakers heading into the fifth inning.  The Lakers senior Kayleigh Milliman drove a single to center field to drive in sophomore Tawny Godin.  The Crimson Hawks answered back with two more runs at the bottom of the sixth to complete the 9-1 loss.
 
In game two, Mercyhurst ignited at the plate driving in three runs at the top of the first inning.  Sophomore Allison Yule and junior Becky Malaga connected singles before senior Courtney Smith tallied her second homerun of the season for 3 RBIs.  Smith currently leads the team with 18 RBIs this season.
 
Indiana (Pa.) tallied a run each in the second and third inning but with another Mercyhurst run at the top of the third by a Megan Smith solo homerun, the Lakers held the 4-2 lead.  Smith currently leads the team with 3 homeruns this season.
 
The Crimson Hawks continued their perfect record in the PSAC after driving a run in the fifth and three in the sixth after a homerun by Indiana (Pa.) Christi Mauk to left field.  The Hawks were held to just seven hits in game two, while the Lakers tallied five hits for four runs.  On defense the Lakers were perfect in the field with no errors.
 
Junior Alexandra Puckly suffered the loss (5-4) after allowing seven hits for six runs and one strikeout. 
 
The Lakers host Slippery Rock University on Tuesday, April 8 at the Mercyhurst Softball field for their first home series of the season.  First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
