Softball Falls in Extra Innings to Slippery Rock

Senior Kayleigh Milliman went 2 for 2 in game two and batted in two runs despite the 3-2 loss in the eighth.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – After an eight inning battle, the Mercyhurst Lakers suffered two loses against Slippery Rock University on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers fell by the score of 3-2 in both contests.
 
Mercyhurst is now 11-17 on the season and are 5-7 in the PSAC West.  Slippery Rock improved to 7-5 in the PSAC West and are now 11-14 overall.
 
In game one, the Lakers suffered a three run inning by the Rock at the bottom of the third to suffer the 3-2 loss.  Junior Annie Truelove (4-10) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing five hits for three runs and collected two strikeouts.  Despite the loss the Lakers outhit Slippery Rock 8 to five but stranded 10 players on base.
 
The Lakers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after junior Becky Malaga drove in senior Megan Smith who reached the base early from a Slippery Rock error.  The Lakers rallied late in the seventh inning with Megan Smith again leading the Lakers with a single to center field.  With no outs and bases loaded, senior Courtney Smith drove the ball to the infield but Megan Smith ran out the play at the plate to trail by one run. 
 
The Lakers battled back in game two taking an early 2-0 lead at the top of the second inning.  Senior Kayleigh Milliman drove in both runs after a single to right center to mark her first hit of the day.  Freshman Rachel DiBartolomeo and Courtney Smith both crossed the dish as a result of Milliman's hit.
 
Slippery Rock narrowed the lead by one after crossing the plate once at the bottom of the second, then tied the contest at the bottom of the fourth.  The Lakers headed to extra innings for only the second time this season.  At the bottom of the eighth, Slippery Rock's Samluk hit a leadoff double and was eventually scored the winning run after A. Beers drilled a single to right field.
 
Junior Alexandra Puckly (5-5) suffered the loss on the mound for the Lakers after allowing eight hits for three runs and tallied two strikeouts. 
 
Senior Courtney Smith extended her hitting streak to eight games after going 2 for 7 against The Rock.  Senior Kayleigh Milliman went 2 for 2 in game two of the contest including driving in the only two runs of the game.

The Lakers host Seton Hill on Tuesday, April 15 at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
