ERIE, Pa. – For the first time since 2011, the Mercyhurst Lakers beat cross-town rival Gannon University at Gannon on Tuesday afternoon.  The Lakers fell 2-1 in game one after an 11 inning battle for the split.

The Lakers losing streak was snapped after the win and improved to 7-13 on the season.  Mercyhurst is also 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division.  Gannon fell to 8-8 overall in the season and is now 1-1 in the PSAC West.

The Golden Knights crossed the dish at the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead over the Lakers.  Recetenwald drove in the first run of the day after Cortazzo advanced to second and in scoring position on a wild pitch with two outs.

Mercyhurst went three up, three down throughout the first three innings until senior Megan Smith marked the first Mercyhurst hit of the game with hard grounder up the center of the field.  Sophomore Taylor Jezuit marked back to back hits before the Golden Knights defense stopped the Mercyhurst rally.

At the top of the sixth, Megan Smith marked her second hit of the game to lead off the inning and was advanced to second after Jezuit laid down a sacrifice bunt.  With two outs, senior Becky Malaga drove the ball to left center field which allowed Smith to cross the dish and even the score at 1.

The contest went into the 11th inning due to a solid pitching performance by junior Annie Truelove (3-8) and Golden Knights Rectenwald (5-3).  Truelove faced 39 batters and allowed just four hits and collected three strikeouts in the ten complete innings.  Gannon however drove in the winning run after deGuia scored off of Cortazzo's single.

In game two, the Lakers picked up their second team shutout of the season after pitcher Alexandra Puckly (4-3) and the Lakers perfect defense.  Puckly pitched seven complete innings, allowed six hits, walked one and collected three strikeouts.

The contest remained scoreless until the sixth inning where the Lakers capitalized on the only error of the game.  With Megan Smith and freshman Khyshewana Nance on first, freshman Rachel DiBartolomeo made her second appearance at the plate.  DiBartolomeo made solid contact deep into left field where Gannon's defense made the initial catch but dropped the ball in transition which allowed Megan Smith to score the winning run.

Sophomore Frankie Costanzo went 2-for-3 to lead the Lakers at the plate.  Senior Kaleigh Milliman, Megan Smith went 2-for-five at the plate while Megan Smith crossed the only two runs of the day for Mercyhurst.

The Lakers travel to Clarion University on Wednesday, April 2 for their first meeting of the season.  The doubleheader, which was originally schedule for March 21, will begin at 3:00 p.m.
