Softball Swept by Seton Hill Despite Last Minute Rally

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team battled back in game two but suffered a 8-7 loss after a walk-off homerun against Seton Hill Thursday afternoon. The Lakers fall to 6-12 overall on the season and fell to 0-2 in the PSAC West while Seton Hill improved to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West.

Senior Megan Smith tallied the lone Mercyhurst hit throughout game one of the doubleheader. She went 1-for-2 at the plate in game one after sailing the ball to left field in the top of the fourth inning. Seton Hill scored 12 runs at the bottom of the fourth to take the lead against the Lakers. They connected for ten hits including a homeruns by Lauren Sauerwein and Kaitlyn Kutchman. At the end of the fifth inning the Lakers suffered a 13-0 defeat.

Junior Annie Truelove (3-7) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing nine hits for eight earned runs in 2 innings pitched. Senior Colleen Griffin came in for the relief midway through the fourth.

In game two the Lakers trail 5-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning after giving up five runs on eight hits. Mercyhurst had just one hit by senior Becky Malaga at the top of the fifth before the four hits in the sixth.

Sophomore Courtney Brothers kicked off the Mercyhurst rally as she singled to the second baseman in the leadoff position. Senior Megan Smith advanced Brothers to second before sophomore Taylor Jezuit sailed the ball to center field. Freshman Rachel DiBartolomeo singled to load the bases for power house senior Courtney Smith. With two strikes, Smith homered to center field to tally her first collegiate grand slam and even the score at five.

After a perfect bottom of the sixth the Lakers forced a pitching change for the Griffins with one out, a hit from sophomore Allison Yule and two Lakers on base. Senior Megan Smith tallied her first RBI of the contest to give the Lakers a one run lead after Milliman crossed the dish. Jezuit immediately made the score 7-5 after driving a single to right field.

At the bottom of the seventh, Seton Hill loaded to players on base with two outs against junior pitcher Alexandra Puckly. The Griffins Kutchman hit her second homerun of the day to tally a walk-off homer and end with a 8-7 victory. Despite the loss, the Lakers were outhit 11 to seven throughout the entire contest and suffered just one error.

Puckly gave up 11 hits in 6.2 innings pitched with two strikeouts. The Griffins' Huff pitched 6.1 innings and allowed six hits for four earned runs and eight strikeouts. Pehrson came in for the relief at the top of the seven and allowed one hit.

The Lakers travel to Edinboro University on Saturday, March 29 for a double header. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
