WHEELING, WVa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team fell twice to Wheeling Jesuit at Lisa's Field on Tuesday afternoon.  The Lakers fell to 6-10 on the season while Wheeling Jesuit improved to 6-11.

In game one the Lakers fell 14-6 after allowing ten runs at the bottom of the fifth inning.  Early in the contest the Lakers scored five runs in the first two innings to lead 5-1.  Despite the loss, Mercyhurst had just one error on defense.

Junior Becky Malaga went 2-for-4 at the plate and crossed the dish once in the first game.  Senior Courtney Smith led the team after going 2-for-2 in the fifth position in the line-up and drove in her first RBIs of the season (3).  Sophomore's Tawny Godin, Chelsea Calabro and Taylor Jezuit also tabbed an RBI a piece.

Junior Annie Truelove (3-6) controlled the mound for 4.2 innings and allowed 13 hits for 11 runs and struck out two.  Senior Megan Smith went in for the relief for .1 of an inning and allowed six hits for three earned runs.

In game two, the Lakers again took the lead in the first two innings but suffered another multiple-run inning by Wheeling Jesuit for the loss.

Mercyhurst scored run a piece in the first and second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.  Senior Megan Smith took control of the leadoff by sending the ball through the left side to get herself on first base to start off the inning.  With two outs, and a runner on base, junior Becky Malaga singled up the middle of the field to drive in her sixth RBI of the season.

In the second inning, freshman Francesca Costanzo led off the inning after drilling the ball to the right center field. Costanza advanced to second after Godin laid down a successful sacrifice bunt which gave sophomore Courtney Brother to chance to mark her second RBI of the season.  The play deemed successful and Costanzo crossed the dish to give Mercyhurst the 2-0 lead.

Mercyhurst held the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lakers defense suffered three runs scored by Wheeling Jesuit.  The Cardinals connected back to back doubles for four hits in total during the sixth to seal the 3-2 victory.
