ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Bloomsburg University by an 8-1 final at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. Mercyhurst improved to 3-2 in the spring and 5-2 overall on the season.
The Lakers swept doubles action to take a 3-0 lead over the Huskies heading into singles play.
Courtney Thompson and
Annie Baich teamed up for an 8-0 win at #2 doubles over Aida Diop and Natalie Greenholt to start the afternoon.
Caroline Bristol and
Sarah Baich followed with an 8-2 win at #1 doubles and the tandem of
Katelyn Caniford and
Devon Hubbard completed the doubles sweep at #3 with an 8-3 victory.
Thompson, who was bumped up to #1 singles, suffered the only blemish on the afternoon after dropping a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Maddie Graziani of Bloomsburg. But, the other five Lakers all earned straight-set wins to lift Mercyhurst to its third consecutive victory.
Sarah Baich was the clincher, defeating Caitlin Flynn in straight sets by a 6-0, 6-1 final.
Annie Baich,
Taylor Wedlake, Caniford, and Hubbard also earned victories in singles competition Saturday.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Saturday, March 8 for a match at Davis & Elkins in Elkins, West Virginia. Start time is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
