Women's Tennis Earns 7-2 Victory Over Ashland

Sarah Baich lost only one game in picking up a win at both singles and doubles on Sunday.
ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team earned its second consecutive victory of the spring season with a 7-2 decision over Ashland University on Sunday afternoon at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Lakers improved to 5-2 overall on the year.

Mercyhurst had a 2-1 advantage after the three doubles matches, but won five of the six singles matches to cruise to the victory.

In doubles, Courtney Thompson and Annie Baich teamed up for an 8-0 victory at #2 to get the afternoon started on the right track. The Eagles would tie it at 1-1 with a win at #3 doubles before Caroline Bristol and Sarah Baich earned an 8-0 win at #1 to give the Lakers the edge at the end of doubles action.

Mercyhurst rattled off the first five victories in singles action to put the match out of reach. Thompson, both Baich sisters, and Katelyn Caniford each won in straight sets while Taylor Wedlake won in three sets, winning the third set by a 10-6 margin.

The only hiiccup came at #1 singles where Bristol lost in three sets to Ashland's #1 Zdenka Pozo, losing the third set by a 10-4 final.

The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, March 1 when they host Bloomsburg University at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. The match gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
