GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercyhurst University softball team left the Pioneer Classic winless after dropping an 8-0 decision to No. 23 Kutztown on Sunday morning. The Lakers are now 0-8 on the young season.
The Lakers connected four hits on 18 total at bats in the five innings played. Sophomore
Taylor Jezuit and
Courtney Brothers, junior
Becky Malaga and senior
Megan Smith all powered hits against the Golden Bears.
Megan Smith has now strung together six games with at least one hit in each.
As the home team, the Lakers played defense at the top of the first inning. Kutztown drove four runs across the plate in the opening inning to take an early lead. Three of the four runs were earned as the Lakers suffered two errors in the first. At the bottom of the first hits from Jezuit, Malaga and
Megan Smith, two runners were left on base after the three outs.
Mercyhurst allowed two more runs at the top of the second and again at the top of the fourth to give the Golden Bears an 8-0 win. The Lakers had Brothers single through the left side with two outs but could not push her across the dish before the last three outs at the bottom of the fifth.
Junior
Annie Truelove suffered the loss on the mound and is now 0-5 on the season. Truelove pitched two complete innings where she allowed two hits for three earned runs and three walks. Senior
Colleen Griffin pitched three innings where she allowed five hits, four runs and walked three batters.
The Lakers travel to Shepherd University on Wednesday, March 12 for a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
