GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercyhurst University softball team suffered two losses on opening day at the Pioneer Classic in Tennessee on Friday. The Lakers are now 0-6 on the season.
In game one, Mercyhurst met PSAC East opponent Kutztown University after a two hour rain delay on Friday afternoon. As a team the Lakers went 3 for 16 at the plate including one RBI scored in the top of the fifth inning but fell 9-1.
Senior
Megan Smith led the team with a single down the left field line to start the rally. Calabro was next at the plate where she advanced Smith to second. Then with the efforts from Godin who reach on a Kutztown error and a single by sophomore
Taylor Jezuit, Smith crossed the plate. Jezuit's RBI marked her first of the season.
Junior
Annie Truelove pitched 4.1 innings to take the loss on the mound in game one. She allowed eight hits for nine runs and five walks. Senior
Colleen Griffin came in for the relief at the bottom of the fifth.
In game two, the Lakers faced PSAC East opponent from East Stroudsbrug to complete the double header for the afternoon. The Lakers went 4 for 16 at the plate after hits from senior
Megan Smith, sophomores
Chelsea Calabro and
Courtney Brothers and freshman
Khyshwaunna Nance.
In the first and second East Stroudsburg connected back to back multi-run innings to take the 9-0 lead early on. The team pushed one more across in the third to complete the 10-0 loss. Senior
Megan Smith suffered the loss at the plate after allowing nine hits for nine earned runs and collected one strikeout. Griffin again came in for the relief where she allowed two hits and one walk for one earned run.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday, February 22 against King College (Tenn.) at 2:00 p.m. The weekend events of the Pioneer Classic will conclude for the Lakers on Sunday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. against Kutztown.
