ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team lost, 70-63, to Slippery Rock Wednesday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Katie Fischer scored a career-high 21 points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest.
 
The Lakers trailed, 34-33, at halftime, but eventually took the lead in the second frame, as Kelley McBroom made it 48-46 Mercyhurst with 9:29 remaining. The Rock answered with nine straight points to take control before Alayna White scored inside with 5:42 left. D'Asia Chambers followed with a three-pointer to give SRU a 58-50 advantage.
 
Another Chambers hoop stretched the lead, but a Natalie Piaggesi layup and two Alex Artise free throws made it 60-54 at the 3:50 mark. Chambers scored again, but White made a lay-in. After a Rock free throw, Fischer sank a trey to pull within four points. The teams traded a pair of foul shots each after that. Fischer hit another jump shot to make it 67-63 with 32 seconds showing on the clock, but Slippery Rock made a free throw and a layup to close the contest.
 
Fischer hit 8-14 field goals, including 3-5 from downtown. She scored 21 points, surpassing her previous career high of 20, which occurred at Slippery Rock on January 18. White recorded 14 points and five rebounds, while McBroom scored eight points off the bench. Chambers and Jazmyne Frost each scored 18 points to lead The Rock.
 
In the first half, Fischer led the Laker attack, scoring six straight Mercyhurst points to keep the Lakers close and then going for a layup and two triples in the final minutes to briefly put the hosts ahead. Slippery Rock hit two late free throws to grab a 34-33 halftime edge.
 
Mercyhurst dropped to 6-16 overall and 4-8 in the PSAC. Slippery Rock is 5-18 overall and 2-11 in the league. The Lakers travel to Edinboro on Saturday, February 15, for a 1 p.m. tip at McComb Fieldhouse.
