EDINBORO, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team suffered their fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) loss Saturday afternoon at Edinboro, 91-64.
Angela Heintz led the Lakers in scoring off the bench with 13, while
Alex Artise added 12 points and pulled down a team high six rebounds.
Edinboro would start off hot making their first three baskets of the game to take an early, 6-0, lead. Sophomores
Katie Fischer and
Jessica Brooks converted on two jumpers to cut the Fighting Scots advantage to two, 6-4. Following a made Edinboro layup,
Natalie Piaggesi would answer with two layups of her own to tie the game at eight with 13:11 remaining in the first half.
Mercyhurst would take their first lead of the contest shortly after at the 10:41 mark. Piaggesi would, again, finish on a layup inside and, then, stole a Nicole Johnson pass that would lead to a Heintz layup at the other end for a four point Laker lead, 14-10.
That would mark the last Mercyhurst lead, as the Fighting Scots would take control the last ten minutes of the half. Mercyhurst would take a ten point deficit into the locker room, 43-33, as they finished the first half shooting 42.9% (15-35) from the field.
Mercyhurst's late first half struggles would continue in the second, as the Fighting Scots started the half on a 30-2 run over an 8:27 span to increase their lead to 38. The Lakers finished off the last 5:41 outscoring Edinboro, 17-8, to conclude the game, 91-64.
The Lakers finished the game shooting 41.2% (28-68) from the floor, 31.3% (5-16) from three, and 33.3% (3-9) from the line.
The loss drops the Lakers' record to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in PSAC play. Edinboro ends their three game losing streak, improving to 4-3, 2-2 PSAC.
Mercyhurst will come back home to face West Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference action Wednesday, December 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
