ERIE, Pa.- The #7/8 Mercyhurst women's hockey team heads to Syracuse for two College Hockey America (CHA) matches this weekend. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 7, and then at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 8. Both contests will be held at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Mercyhurst has an 8-1-1 record, including a 2-0-0 mark in CHA play. It swept Robert Morris at home last weekend, defeating the Colonials, 3-0, on October 31 and then winning, 4-1, the following day.
Emily Janiga scored three goals in the two outings, earning CHA Co-Player of the Week honors.
Amanda Makela recorded her fourth shutout of the season Friday and then made a season-high 26 saves Saturday.
Syracuse is 2-3-5 overall and 1-0-1 in the CHA this season. It won and tied with Penn State at home last weekend. In a 3-1 win on October 31, Kaillie Goodnough, Julie Knerr, and Allie LaCombe each scored as Jenn Gilligan tallied 19 saves in net. On Saturday, Alysha Burriss and Jessica Sibley scored for SU, but Penn State the match in the third period, eventually forcing a draw. Gilligan posted 15 saves in the game.
Mercyhurst stands third in scoring defense this season, allowing 1.10 goals in 10 outings. It also ranks third in killing penalties, as the Lakers have given up one power-play goal in 38 chances.
The Lakers lead the all-time series, 26-0-2, with Syracuse. Mercyhurst went 4-0-1 against the Orange last season, including a 2-1 win in a CHA Tournament semifinal at the MIC.
