Men's Hockey Skates To 3-3 Overtime Tie At Canisius Saturday Night

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior forward Daniel Bahntge scored two goals and freshman goaltender Brandon Wildung stopped 35 shots in his first collegiate start on Saturday night, helping the Mercyhurst University men's hockey team skate to a 3-3 overtime tie against Canisius. The Lakers, who have now played in three straight overtime games, moved to 5-4-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the Atlantic Hockey Conference standings. The Golden Griffins moved to 4-5-4 overall and 3-3-3 in league play.

Bahntge's two goals marked his first multiple goal game since scoring twice at Canisius on January 23, 2014 - a span of 26 games. The two tallies, goals number 41 and 42 of his career, moved him to within two points of becoming the 19th member of the 100-point club during the Division I era at Mercyhurst - and third this season. Seniors Matthew Zay and Ryan Misiak have already reached the milestone earlier in the year.

The senior from Westlake, Ohio, scored the first two goals of the contest to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Just 2:19 into the contest, Bahntge lit the lamp for his second goal of the season, beating Canisius starter Adam Harris on a wraparound. Freshman Jonathan Charbonneau and senior Tyler Shiplo had the assists.

Then, with Mercyhurst on a five-minute power play, Bahntge struck again at the 4:28 mark of the opening period, to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Charbonneau took an initial shot from point-blank range that Harris was able to kick aside, but, no Canisius defender could clear away the rebound and Bahntge buried a shot into an empty net for his third goal of the year. Senior Zac Frischmon had the other helper.

Canisius tied the game on back-to-back goals later in the opening period. Ralph Cuddemi got the home team on the scoreboard at the 8:06 mark, beating Wildung for his fifth goal of the season. Then, just 70 seconds later, at 9:16, Ryan Schmelzer knocked home his second goal of the year to knot the game at 2-2.

Sophomore Kyle Dutra slid a rebound past Harris at the 15:01 mark of the opening period to regain a one-goal lead for the Lakers. Sophomore Philippe Drouin snapped an initial shot from the right point that was stopped by Harris, but the rebound ended up right on the tape of Dutra who slid a backhander under the outstretched glove of the Canisius netminder for his fifth goal of the season. Redshirt senior Kyle Just had the other assist on the final goal of a wide-open first period.

Shots favored Canisius, 10-9, in the opening stanza.

Wildung settled in nicely and Canisius turned to a new face in goal, Reilly Turner, during the second period as the teams went scoreless in the middle stanza. Mercyhurst outshot Canisius, 13-9, in the second period.

The Golden Griffins scored the only goal of the third period to force overtime. Cody Freeman got behind the Mercyhurst defense and had a breakaway opportunity on the Lakers' freshman goaltender. Wildung made the initial stop of Freeman, but the rebound came right back to the Canisius senior, who was then able to jam home the rebound to knot the game at 3-3. Braeden Rigney and Mitch McCrank had the assists.

The Lakers' penalty killing unit was put to the test twice in the latter stages of the third period, but was able to keep Canisius off of the scoreboard. Mercyhurst, which entered the game ranked 52nd in the country in killing off penalties (75.6%), held the Golden Griffins to 0-for-4 on the power play. The Lakers, meanwhile, went 1-for-5

Overtime saw end-to-end action with both Wildung and Turner coming up huge to preserve the tie. Wildung made the first big stop of the overtime, robbing Cuddemi with a glove save on a shot from right in the slot area with 3:35 remaining. Then, with 45 seconds left in the extra session, Turner robbed Bahntge, who was looking for the hat trick, with a glove save of his own to keep the Lakers from earning a road victory.

Wildung, after a nervous looking first period, settled in and played well in his first collegiate start. He turned aside 35 shots, including 18 in the third period and overtime, to help the Lakers get a point in the standings. Meanwhile, Turner stopped all 24 shots he faced in relief of Harris, who stopped just 6-of-9 shots in the opening period. Turner moved to 2-1-2 on the season.

The Lakers will be off until Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6 when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to square off against the Black Knights of Army in a two-game series. Faceoffs from Tate Rink are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
