Volleyball Sweeps Indiana (Pa.) on Senior Day Saturday Afternoon

ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team swept Indiana (Pa.), 3-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division match Saturday afternoon. The Lakers won by scores of 25-12, 25-9, and 25-20 to celebrate senior day at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Coming off its crucial win over Clarion on Friday, Mercyhurst made sure there was no letdown in the final home contest of the season. Rachel Crittle scored twice early and then Lauren Kenny posted two kills for a 6-4 advantage in the first game. Kenny and Lexi Stefanov combined for a block to stretch the margin. Ahead 12-7, Sarah Wegrzyn led an 8-0 run to pull away. Kelly Vitt found Wegrzyn for a kill before a Wegrzyn ace. Camille Alvarez followed with a kill and then Wegrzyn served another ace. Crittle scored and then Alvarez recorded two more points. Wegrzyn capped the spurt with a third ace for a 20-7 lead. Hannah Tombaugh hit Stefanov for a kill and then Samantha Giardina served an ace to close out the opener.

In the second set, several Indiana errors allowed Mercyhurst to go up early. Kills by Alvarez and Kenny made it 13-5 and then Vitt assisted on a Haley Adams point. Crittle and Kenny later teamed up for a block and then Kenny scored again, making it 20-6. A Crittle block pushed the Lakers closer and then IUP made two errors, putting Mercyhurst ahead, 2-0, in the match.

Coach Ryan Patton was able to empty the bench in the third game, as every Laker saw action. Vitt finished with 16 assists, while Tombaugh dished out six and Makayla Mollé added four. Tai Lattimore collected seven digs. Thirteen different Lakers scored in the sweep.

Mercyhurst improved to 18-10 overall and 13-7 in the league. IUP dropped to 9-18 overall and 5-15 in the conference. The Lakers close the regular season next weekend, playing at Seton Hill and California (Pa.) November 7-8.

Alvarez, Crittle, and Lattimore were recognized prior to the match as the Lakers' seniors wrapped up their home careers.
