#8 Men's Soccer Takes Down Rival Gannon Downtown, 5-1, to Conclude Regular Season Play

ERIE, Pa. – The #8 Mercyhurst men's soccer team beat rival Gannon downtown, 5-1, to close out regular season play.

The Lakers led 1-0 at the half as Danny Deakin scored his tenth goal of the season in the 19th minute off a Richard Vanhorne pass. Vanhorne crossed the ball to Deakin who put a shot in the upper left corner from 20 yards out.

Jack Watson would score in the 50th minute when he put a shot on goal from 35 yards out that deflected off the Gannon goalkeeper's fingertips, into the net for a, 2-0, lead. Watson's goal total is now at 19 on the season.

Senior Fernando Martinez would make it 3-0 in the 58th minute off an assist pass from Sten Marcon. Marcson found Martinez down the right side to beat the keeper bottom left.

The Golden Knights' would get on the board the board three minutes later. Alejandro Ferrero  passed the ball through the Lakers defense as Tyron Springer beat Mercyhurst keeper Ryan Arvin lower left for his second goal of the season.

Martinez would record one more goal when Watson put a pass through the Gannon defense. As goalkeeper Manuel Mangu came out of net, Martinez beat Mangu at the 20 yard line for a empty net goal and a, 4-1 Laker lead.

Mark Roche would finish off the scoring as he has now scored in the last two contests. Roche lobbed the ball over Mangu's hands from 30 yards out off a free kick. It was Roche's second goal coming off a free kick.

Mercyhurst outshot the Golden Knights, 22-5, throughout the game and held the corner kick advantage, 5-0.

Arvin did not record any saves during the contest, but his record remains unbeaten at 11-0-0.

The Lakers finish the season with a record of 16-2-0 overall and 10-2-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Their win streak is now at 12 straight as Mercyhurst will begin to prepare for the PSAC tournament which will be played at Mercyhurst Soccer Field beginning November 7. As the number one overall seed, Mercyhurst will face the winner of (4) West Chester and (5) Slippery Rock on November 4.
