Mercyhurst is 4-2 lifetime against the Golden Eagles which includes a perfect 3-0 mark at the friendly confines of Tullio Field. Last season, however, Clarion jumped out to a 20-0 lead and held on for a 20-13 victory over the Lakers on a soggy evening at Memorial Stadium in Clarion. Running back
Brandon Brown-Dukes carried the ball 11 times for 140 yards, breaking off a career-long 77-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Golden Eagle quarterback Darelle Carson threw for 209 yards and rushed for another 85 in the victory.
The Lakers (0-4, 0-3 PSAC West), playing at home for just the second time this season, are coming off of a 41-7 loss at IUP last Saturday. The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 27-0 first quarter lead and held the Laker offense at bay until redshirt sophomore quarterback
Zach Emerick led the squad on a 99-yard touchdown drive resulting in the team's only score early in the fourth quarter. The Lakers were held to just 151 yards of total offense with 34 of those coming on the ground. Sophomore running back
Drew Robinson led the team with 30 yards on five carries, but fumbled twice, including the opening kickoff of the game. Brown-Dukes was held to 21 yards on 14 carries.
Three quarterbacks (Emerick, redshirt junior
Brendan Boylan, and freshman
Ramroth Finnegan) combined to complete 11-of-24 passes for 117 yards with Emerick calling his own number on a one-yard touchdown run for the team's only points.
Senior free safety
Colin Kimball picked off his second pass of the season, leading to the Lakers' only score. It was his tenth career interception, tying him for seventh on the school's all-time list with former Laker defensive back Glenn Novak (1989-92). He currently leads the Lakers with 27 total tackles on the season.
Mercyhurst ranks 15th out of 16 teams in the PSAC in scoring offense (16.0), dead last in rushing offense (68.0), and 12th in passing offense (163.0). All told, the Lakers rank ahead of only Cheyney in the PSAC in total offense (231.0).
Clarion (2-2, 2-1 PSAC West) suffered its first conference loss of the season last Saturday when unbeaten Gannon defeated the Golden Eagles 33-7 during Clarion's Homecoming. Clarion mustered just 203 yards of total offense against the Golden Knights while allowing 531 on the defensive side of the ball.
The Golden Eagles opened the season with a 27-13 loss to FCS-member St. Francis (Pa.) back on September 6. Head coach Jay Foster's team then won back-to-back games against Millersville and Cheyney before last weekend's loss.
Running back Delrece Williams and linebacker/defensive end Julian Howsare are players to watch for Clarion. Williams leads the Golden Eagles in rushing with 249 yards and five touchdowns in four games. Howsare, meanwhile, is one of the top defensive players in the league. He leads the team with 31 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and three sacks thus far.
