#11 Men's Soccer Dominates Rival Slippery Rock, 6-0; Watson and Vanhorne Score Twice

ERIE, Pa. – The #11 men's soccer team dominated rival Slippery Rock at home Saturday afternoon on senior day, 6-0.

After losing, 2-3, in double overtime for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship a year ago, the Lakers came out with a statement to prove as they scored all six goals in the first half.

PSAC leading goal scorer Jack Watson added to his total early in the 8th minute when he received a touch pass from Junior Richard Vanhorne for the early, 1-0, lead.

Senior Fernando Martinez was rewarded with a goal on his last regular season performance in front of the home crowd to make it a 2-0 advantage. National assist leader Danny Deakin added to his total when he put a ball to the foot of Martinez in the 13th minute to beat the keeper right side. It was Martinez's eighth goal of the season and Deakin's 11th assist.

Deakin and Martinez would reverse roles in the 20th minute for a, 3-0, Laker lead. Martinez's pass through Rock defenders found Deakin onside to beat the keeper right. It was Deakin's ninth recorded goal and Martinez's eighth assist.

In the 26th minute, this time Vanhorne would receive a pass from Watson to set up his fifth goal of the season for a, 4-0, lead. Watson's cross pass from the right side found Vanhorne in the box for a shot that beat the goalkeeper right side.

Just four minutes later, in the 30th minute, Vanhorne would assist Watson for the second time in the half to go up, 5-0.

Watson and Vanhorne connected with each other again in the 39th minute for the sixth and final goal. Watson's cross pass found Vanhorne on the left post where he was able to finish right side. It was Vanhorne's sixth goal and Watson's seventh assist on the year.

Mercyhurst outperformed The Rock from start to finish. The Lakers outshot Slippery Rock, 19-8 and held the corner kick advantage, 4-2.

Goalkeeper Ryan Arvin recorded four saves and picked up his fourth shutout of the season. With the win, Arvin remains undefeated in net at 9-0-0.

Watson, a Dublin, Ireland native, moved into second place for goals scored in a season at Mercyhurst with 18. He trails Laker record holder Anthony Maher, who finished the 2001 season with 24 goals.

The win guarantees a spot in the PSAC tournament, and depending on their last two games (at Lock Haven & at Gannon), will determine their seed. As of today, they lead the PSAC with 24 points and hold the tie breaker over Bloomsburg.

Mercyhurst improves their overall record to 14-2-0 overall (7-1-0 PSAC) and continues their win streak to double digits at ten. Slippery Rocks' record falls to 9-6-0 and 5-4-0 PSAC.

The Lakers will be back in action Wednesday, October 29, at Lock Haven. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
