#8/9 Women's Hockey Takes Down Minnesota State, 5-1, Friday Afternoon

ERIE, Pa.- The #8/9 Mercyhurst women's hockey team beat Minnesota State, 5-1, Friday afternoon. Sarah Robello and Megan Whiddon each scored two goals in the non-conference win at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers broke the game open. At the 6:23 mark of the second frame, Jaclyn Arbour slid a pass from right to left in front of the crease, where Robello cut in and beat the MSU goalie for the game's first score. Lauren Kilroy also assisted on the play.

Whiddon made it a 2-0 advantage at the 14:48 mark. Kilroy dished to Jenna Dingeldein, who found Whiddon in the left slot, where the sophomore blasted a shot into the back of the net for a power play goal. Mercyhurst headed into the locker room with a 2-0 margin through two periods.

Robello continued the momentum in the third, deflecting a Molly Byrne shot into the goal at the 8:29 mark. Emily Janiga recorded an assist on the power play score. A few minutes later, Dingeldein wrapped around behind the net and backhanded a shot past the Maverick goaltender on the right side at the 11:25 mark.

Minnesota State got on the board, but the Lakers regained their four-goal advantage late in the contest. On another power play, Whiddon finished a Caroline Luczak pass for her second goal of the day. Kilroy picked up her third assist of the match on the goal.

Mercyhurst outshot MSU, 45-18, and won 41-69 faceoffs. It converted 3-7 of power play chances and held the Mavs to no goals on three PP opportunities.

Amanda Makela totaled 17 saves in goal, notching her fifth victory of the season. Robello finished with two goals and an assist, while Whiddon scored twice. Kilroy compiled three assists and Dingeldein added a goal and a helper.

Mercyhurst (5-1-1) looks to sweep MSU (0-4-1) tomorrow. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start at the MIC.
