ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst University volleyball team will take action in two PSAC Western matches this weekend. The Lakers travel to Slippery Rock on Friday, October 24. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. On Saturday, October 25, the team will head to Edinboro University and take on the Scots at 1 p.m.
The Lakers look to bounce back after a pair of tough five-game losses last weekend. The recent losses haven't kept Mercyhurst from a winning record, though, as they sit 14-9 overall and 9-6 in the conference.
Sarah Wegrzyn leads the Lakers with 255.5 points, including 230 kills this season.
Lexi Stefanov and
Lauren Kenny are also helping the cause with 233 points and 226 points, respectively. Likewise, these three can all thank
Kelly Vitt, as she leads the Lakers with 851 assists.Â
Slippery Rock is coming off a 3-0 win against Alderson Broaddus University. The Rock improved to 16-8 on the season, and is tied with the Lakers in the conference at 9-6. Senior Kristy Lake leads the team with 281.5 points and sophomore Leah Jones is right behind her with 263 points. Janna Reily is helping those two out with 421 assists as well.
Edinboro is gaining momentum going into this weekend as they come off a 3-0 sweep of IUP. The Fighting Scots are 19-7 on the season and 10-5 in the conference. Jen Gruber is on top with 268 points and Marah Maycock is close behind with 247 points. Sydney Trathen leads the way in assists with 634.
It's moving weekend for the Lakers as they are currently seventh in the PSAC West. The Rock is sixth and the Fighting Scots are fifth in the standings. With seven conference contests left, this weekend is big for climbing up the ladder. The Lakers are three matches out of fourth place. The top four teams from the West make the PSAC Tournament.Â
